Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat Review
Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat
I have always used Britax car seats as they have the best quality and safety records on the market. If you ask those who work with car accident victims you will find many of them swear by Britax. The consumer reviews and consumer reports that have been done are enough to prove to anyone that when it comes to the safety of your child no one can beat Britax on car seats. So I knew when I found out I was expecting my third child that I wanted a Britax for her. The only problem was that I had a smaller car, two other children and these car seats are known for being quite large.
With my first child I didn’t start out with the Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat but once we discovered the difference in their seats I never went back. My second child never had a starter car seat. He was in a Britax from the beginning and is in the booster now. But I knew I didn’t have room for a huge car seat in my car and upgrading vehicles wasn’t in the cards. So when a friend told me that the Britax Diplomat was a convertible car seat that was more compact for smaller cars I knew I had to check it out.
True to Britax fashion the Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat was a five point harness system and included the side impact protection. Like the much larger Boulevard it included the extra foam ‘wings’ around the head and torso that help absorb the impact if you are in a collision. Having seen accident victims in my life I knew that this added protection was invaluable. Not only this but the seat would last up to 40 lbs and worked in rear-facing and forward-facing positions.
Everyone said this compact design was much better for those who had smaller cars or more than one child so I decided to take a chance and order it. I excitedly waited on the arrival knowing I had plenty of time. The baby wasn’t due for another two months.
When the Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat arrived I was struck by how soft and plush the fabric of the cover was. It looked like it would be extremely comfortable for her. I liked that fact since babies who do not like their car seat can make car trips quite miserable. Add that to a five and eight year old in the back seat as well and it could be downright miserable just to go to the grocery store.
As soft as the fabric was it still appeared to be quite durable. I could look at it and tell that it would withstand quite a bit of use by a baby over the years. Just to test it out I took off the cover and put it back on and removal was simple and effortless. I wouldn’t say I’d want to have to put it back on daily, but it wasn’t too bad.

Just like the previous models of Britax I had used, the Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat appeared to be sturdy and safe. Yet this model had some great features that those older models did not have. Some of these features didn’t even catch my attention until the little one was born.
The size was perfect. I immediately installed it in the back seat of my small car and there was plenty of room for my son’s booster and my oldest daughter to still sit. I won’t say that either of the older kids were happy to be in such close quarters but until we can upgrade to a van or SUV at least we have plenty of room. And once we put it in place, it was not going anywhere. The Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat is as secure as any car seat I’ve ever owned.
I was concerned about being able to use the front passenger seat with the Diplomat in rear-facing position. After all we weren’t doing a separate infant seat. This would be her seat from the beginning. But it turned out that there was plenty of space to move the passenger seat back and still use it.
It wasn’t until my baby was born that I realized how great the Britax Diplomat Convertible really was. She slept, well, like a baby every time we were in the car. Her head was kept still by the ‘wings’ on the side and she actually used them for a pillow of sorts. On the rare occasion she stayed awake she was tall enough to see her brother and sister or look out the window. Never once did she give me a problem while in the seat.
Like all of my kids she is a grower. The fact that I can adjust the height of the headrest and harness with a simple knob instead of uninstalling the car seat is fabulous. As she grows I am able to adjust it easily with her sitting in it. The padding moves with it as well.
Another great thing is that loosening the straps is effortless. Just pushing a simple button is all that is required. It makes it painless for her and simple for me to do when I’m in a hurry.
One thing she really likes is how I can make the seat recline. This is a feature that neither of my previous Britax models had. I’ve heard of reclining in forward-facing models but this is the first time I’ve seen a rear-facing seat recline.
All of this is great but the day to day stuff is awesome as well. Just like every Britax I’ve ever owned the straps are wide and sturdy. They do not get tangled up like many car seat straps. This keeps me from trying to untangle and strap her in at once. It has a belly pad that protects her from the straps across her stomach. This is a great feature for anyone who has ever owned another car seat and knows what I mean by that irritation from the straps.
The Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat is by far an exceptional car seat. My only complaint is that it doesn’t go higher than 40 pounds. I’d recommend watching for a great deal on Amazon and saving some money when buying one.
